Natural Anti-Ageing: Nutrients That Slow the Signs of Ageing
Time passes, but that doesn't mean you have to accept its effects on your skin, energy and wellbeing without a fight. Today we're sharing nature's secrets for addressing the vis...
Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol (stilbene family) produced by certain plants under stress (UV, fungi). It is found in the skin of red grapes, red wine, berries, and peanuts. It activates sirtuins (SIRT1, SIRT3) — the "longevity proteins" that regulate DNA repair, mitochondrial function, and cellular inflammation. This mechanism, similar to the effects of caloric restriction, earned it the label "caloric restriction mimetic" in scientific literature.
Trans-resveratrol highly purified at 95%+, the biologically active isomer (as opposed to cis-resveratrol, which is inactive). Source: Polygonum cuspidatum (Japanese knotweed), the richest known natural source of trans-resveratrol. Check the purity percentage on your supplement: a "resveratrol extract" without specifying 95% trans-resveratrol is often a much less concentrated product.
Preclinical studies (rodents) are impressive, but human results are more nuanced. Clinical trials have shown positive effects on cardiovascular health markers (LDL oxidation, arterial flexibility), insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory markers. A 2020 study (Farzaei et al.) showed improvements in cognitive function in older adults. The evidence is encouraging but still limited by study size and duration. Resveratrol is a promising supplement, not a cure.
With a meal containing fats (lipids), which significantly increases its bioavailability (resveratrol is fat-soluble). Avoid taking on an empty stomach. Piperine (black pepper extract) can increase resveratrol absorption, but its interaction with drug metabolism via CYP3A4 should be noted if you take medications. Take in the morning or at noon.
Yes. The famous longevity protocol by Dr David Sinclair (Harvard) combines resveratrol with NMN: NMN restores NAD+ (the "fuel" for sirtuins), and resveratrol activates these same sirtuins. This combination is theoretically more powerful than each compound alone. SuperKure offers this precise combination with its anti-ageing pack NMN + Resveratrol + Shilajit (which itself improves NMN bioavailability).
250–500 mg/day of trans-resveratrol is the most studied range in human clinical trials. 3-month courses with a break are recommended (continuous long-term safety not fully established). Take in the morning with a fatty meal. Some researchers take 500 mg–1g/day, but there is no evidence that higher doses are more effective in humans, and the risk of interactions increases.
Caution with anticoagulants (resveratrol inhibits platelet aggregation and CYP2C9, increasing the effect of warfarin). NSAIDs (potentiated anti-inflammatory effect). Hormone-sensitive cancers: resveratrol has weak oestrogenic effects — seek medical advice if breast or uterine cancer history. Pregnant and breastfeeding women: avoid (insufficient safety data). Blood-sugar-lowering medications: resveratrol can potentiate hypoglycaemia.
