Kiki Health: The Organic and Natural Supplement Revolution
Kiki Health has become a go-to name in the world of organic and natural supplements. This innovative British brand offers nutritional supplements made from whole ingredients, or...
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is an organic, bioavailable form of sulphur found naturally in fruits, vegetables and meats, but in quantities too low to exert a therapeutic effect. Sulphur is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body and is essential for the synthesis of collagen, keratin (hair and nails), glutathione (the primary cellular antioxidant) and the disulphide bonds that maintain protein structure. MSM supplementation is particularly well-studied for joints and sports recovery.
MSM flakes (or crystallised flakes) are the purest form of MSM — 99.9% methylsulfonylmethane with no fillers or excipients. It is the same molecule as fine powder, but in coarser crystals that dissolve easily in warm water. The flake format is ideal for high doses (clinical studies use doses of 1,500 to 6,000 mg/day) because it is economical and free from additives. Capsules are more convenient but contain less MSM per unit.
A study published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage (2006) showed that supplementation with 3,000 mg of MSM twice daily for 12 weeks significantly reduced pain and improved functional scores in patients with knee osteoarthritis. A 2017 meta-analysis (Nutrients) confirmed MSM's anti-inflammatory effect, with a notable reduction in inflammation markers (IL-6, TNF-alpha). The effective dose in studies ranges from 1,500 to 6,000 mg per day.
Dissolve the recommended dose (generally 1 to 2 g, approximately 1 level teaspoon) in a glass of warm or hot water — the flakes dissolve perfectly within a few seconds at 40–50°C. You can also add them to a fruit juice to mask the slightly bitter taste of MSM. Start with a low dose (500 mg) and increase gradually to avoid initial detox effects (mild skin rashes or transient fatigue) linked to sulphur mobilisation.
Sulphur is an essential constituent of keratin, the structural protein of hair and nails. Disulphide bonds between sulphur-containing amino acids (cysteine, methionine) determine the strength and flexibility of the hair shaft. Several observational studies and a few clinical trials show improved hair growth, nail strength and hair shine with a daily intake of 1,000 to 3,000 mg of MSM over 3 to 6 months. Combine with biotin and marine collagen for a synergistic effect.
MSM is generally very well tolerated and compatible with the majority of dietary supplements. It can be taken with glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen and omega-3 for enhanced joint support. One precaution: MSM may potentially increase the effects of anticoagulants (warfarin) — consult your doctor if you are on anticoagulant therapy. People with sulphur or sulphite allergies should exercise caution (although MSM is organic sulphur, different from sulphites).
MSM is considered very safe at recommended doses. Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient clinical data. People with kidney disorders should consult a doctor before supplementation (urinary excretion of sulphur). Contraindicated in cases of known sulphur allergy. Children should not take this product without medical advice.
