Slimming Routine and Supplements: What Actually Works
We all know that particular kind of tiredness. Not the kind from missing sleep, the kind from a diet that never sticks, a stomach that bloats for no obvious reason, energy that ...
Zeolite (primarily clinoptilolite, its most active natural species) is a microporous volcanic mineral formed by the meeting of lava and seawater. Its negatively charged three-dimensional cage structure allows it to trap (chelate) positively charged substances in the digestive tract: heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury), ammonia, nitrosamines and certain environmental toxins. It is one of the most widely used binding agents in functional medicine for targeted detox protocols.
The quality of Zeolite depends directly on its geological source and processing. Clinoptilolite is the variety used in clinical studies and human dietary supplements. It must be purified (raw Zeolite can contain impurities) and micronised or reduced to an appropriate particle size to maximise the absorption surface. Kiki Health uses purified and tested Zeolite — check for the mention 'clinoptilolite' and the purification process on the packaging.
Pilot and preliminary studies show promising results. A study published in the Journal of the International Society for Sports Nutrition (2009) showed that Zeolite powder reduced blood octane levels in athletes. Croatian studies have documented effects on urinary excretion of heavy metals. Human research remains limited but the in vitro binding properties and animal studies are solid.
This is Zeolite's main limitation: its non-selectivity. Under certain conditions, it may potentially bind essential minerals (calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium) in addition to toxins. To minimise this risk, take Zeolite away from meals and other supplements (at least 1 to 2 hours apart), and stay well hydrated. Short courses (2 to 4 weeks) limit this risk compared to chronic daily intake.
Take Zeolite on an empty stomach or away from meals and medications (minimum 2 hours). Mix the recommended dose in a large glass of water (200 to 300 ml minimum). Generous hydration is essential to facilitate the elimination of bound toxins and avoid constipation. Start with a low dose and gradually increase. 2 to 4 week courses are common, with breaks between courses.
Zeolite can potentially absorb and reduce the absorption of medications in the digestive tract — the same principle as activated charcoal. Never take Zeolite within 2 to 4 hours before or after taking medications (antibiotics, thyroid hormones, cardiovascular medications, etc.). If you are on medication, consult your doctor before using Zeolite.
Zeolite is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to lack of clinical data. In cases of intestinal obstruction or severe constipation, avoid taking it without medical advice. People with kidney failure should exercise caution as chelated toxin elimination occurs primarily via the renal route. Do not use by inhalation (pulmonary risk from fine powder).
