Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is the second most cultivated mushroom in the world after the common button mushroom, and also one of the most scientifically studied medicinal mushrooms. Used for 6,000 years in Asian medicine, it contains a unique beta-glucan called lentinan (or lentinane), extracted since the 1980s in Japan for its immunomodulatory properties. Shiitake is also a rare source of vitamin D2 and erythritol (a natural sugar).
Lentinan is the most documented active compound among mushroom beta-glucans. Japanese clinical trials (notably at the University of Tokyo) used injectable lentinan as an adjuvant in oncology in the 1980s–90s. For the oral route, a 2015 study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition showed that daily consumption of 5–10 g of dried Shiitake for 4 weeks significantly improved immunity markers (salivary IgA, NK cell activity) in healthy adults.
Yes, Shiitake is one of the rare plant sources of vitamin D, in the form of D2 (ergocalciferol). The vitamin D content is low in indoor-cultivated mushrooms, but it can be multiplied by 10 to 100 by exposing the mushrooms to sunlight (or UV light) for a few hours before consumption — the sterol ergosterol then converts to vitamin D2. Kiki Health Shiitake capsules concentrate the active compounds, but the vitamin D2 content in standardised extracts remains variable.
Take 1 to 2 capsules per day with a glass of water, preferably with a meal. Immunomodulatory effects accumulate over 4 to 8 weeks of continuous intake. For seasonal immune support (autumn-winter), a 3-month course is recommended. Shiitake can be taken alongside other medicinal mushrooms (Reishi, Maitake, Lion's Mane) without interaction issues.
Shiitake is rich in L-ergothioneine, a rare antioxidant nicknamed 'the longevity thioneine' for its role in protecting cells against oxidative stress. It also contains zinc, selenium and copper, all involved in skin and hair health. High-end cosmetics use Shiitake extracts for their anti-ageing skin properties. Oral intake of Shiitake can contribute to a more even complexion over the long term.
Shiitake can occasionally cause a skin reaction called 'shiitake dermatitis' or flagellate dermatitis in some sensitive individuals, especially if the mushroom is consumed raw or undercooked. This reaction is very rare with standardised capsule extracts. People on immunosuppressants should consult a doctor before use. Not recommended in the pre-operative period.
