Sea Moss, or Irish Moss (Chondrus crispus), is a red Atlantic seaweed used for centuries in Irish and Caribbean traditional cooking and medicine. Its popularity on TikTok and Instagram stems from its exceptional nutritional properties: it contains up to 92 of the 102 essential minerals the human body needs, including iodine, potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, and iron. It is one of the most micronutrient-dense marine superfoods available.
Yes, for mineral and concentrated nutrient absorption. The capsule format offers precise dosing, maximum convenience, and the absence of the marine taste often found unpleasant. Fresh Sea Moss gel provides more natural mucilage (soluble fibre), beneficial for the gut, but its preparation is time-consuming. Kiki Health standardised capsules are the most practical option for regular daily intake.
This is its most documented use on social media. Sea Moss contains plant-based collagen (carrageenans), vitamin E, zinc, and sulphur — all involved in skin and nail/hair health. Sulphur supports keratin (the structural protein in hair and nails). Iodine regulates the thyroid, which is itself involved in hair quality. Specific clinical studies on Sea Moss for skin are still limited, but the traditional use and nutritional profile are consistent with these benefits.
This is a crucial question. Iodine is essential for thyroid function, and Sea Moss is a significant source. For people with iodine deficiency (common in vegan diets), this is a major advantage. However, excessive iodine intake can disrupt the thyroid, especially in people with thyroid conditions (hypo- or hyperthyroidism). Kiki Health capsules allow for controlled dosing, which is safer than unmetered bulk powder.
The carrageenans and mucilagenous fibres in Sea Moss form a natural gel in the intestine that helps lubricate and protect the gut lining. It may help reduce colon irritation, support a diverse microbiome (prebiotic effect), and regulate bowel transit. This is a well-documented traditional use in Caribbean culture for digestive issues.
Take 2 to 3 capsules per day with a large glass of water, preferably in the morning with a meal. Do not exceed the recommended dose on the packaging. If you are taking other iodine supplements (kelp, seaweed), account for your total iodine intake to stay below 600 mcg/day (EFSA upper limit).
Sea Moss is contraindicated in thyroid disease (hyper- or hypothyroidism) without medical agreement, due to its iodine content. People on anticoagulants should exercise caution (Sea Moss may have mild anticoagulant properties). Pregnant women should consult their doctor to validate the additional iodine intake. Avoid if you have a known seaweed allergy.
