Transdermal (or transcutaneous) magnesium is magnesium chloride applied directly to the skin in the form of oil, gel or spray. The cutaneous route bypasses the digestive tract — particularly useful for people with intestinal sensitivity to oral magnesium supplements (laxative effect of high-dose oral magnesium forms). Pilot studies suggest that magnesium chloride can cross the skin barrier via hair follicles and sweat glands to reach the bloodstream and muscle tissues.
This is an active debate in the scientific literature. A 2017 study published in PLOS One (Watkins 2017) demonstrated that transdermal application of magnesium chloride increased intra-erythrocyte magnesium levels after 12 weeks of regular application in deficient subjects. Other studies indicate more limited absorption than oral. Both routes are complementary: oral for overall status, transdermal for local muscle recovery and as an alternative for people intolerant to oral magnesium.
Apply 5 to 10 sprays or the recommended amount to zones with optimal absorption: the inside of the arms, thighs, abdomen, feet. Leave to absorb for 20 to 30 minutes before rinsing (or do not rinse). A slight tingling sensation initially is normal — this is the reaction of magnesium chloride on the skin. It diminishes with regular use. For muscle recovery, apply directly to the muscles worked after exercise.
Yes, this is one of its most documented uses. Magnesium is a cofactor of more than 300 enzymes involved in ATP energy production and muscle contraction. A post-workout application to the worked muscle groups can support muscle relaxation, reduce cramps and accelerate recovery. Combine with omega-3s and antioxidants for a complete sports recovery protocol.
Magnesium is involved in the regulation of cortisol (the stress hormone) and in the synthesis of melatonin (the sleep hormone). Transdermal magnesium applied in the evening (on the feet or legs) can promote muscle and nervous relaxation conducive to falling asleep. Several users report improved sleep quality, mental calm and a reduction in nocturnal muscle tension. Combine with Kiki Health Liquid Ionic Magnesium for comprehensive coverage.
Transdermal magnesium is very well tolerated. Not recommended for application on damaged, irritated, burnt or open-wound skin. In cases of established kidney failure, consult your doctor before any magnesium supplementation (regardless of the route of administration). Test on a small area of skin first in cases of hypersensitive skin or a history of eczema.
Magnesium chloride may leave a slight white residue (salt crystallisation) after drying on some skin types. This residue disappears by rinsing with warm water after 20 to 30 minutes of absorption. Some formulas include moisturising agents to limit this effect. Apply in a thin layer to minimise visible deposit.
