Turmeric: Benefits, Inflammation, Digestion and Best Supplements
Chronic inflammation, sluggish digestion, persistent tiredness, dull complexion... In wellness and longevity circles, a handful of natural ingredients are valued for supporting ...
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a tropical spice root whose active compound, curcumin, is one of the most studied natural anti-inflammatories in the world — with over 15,000 published studies in medical databases. Curcumin simultaneously inhibits several pro-inflammatory pathways (NF-kB, COX-2, LOX) and acts as a powerful antioxidant neutralising free radicals. Kiki Health Turmeric Powder is the traditional dietary form, ideal for daily culinary use or in drinks.
This is the main challenge with turmeric: curcumin is very poorly absorbed by the digestive tract on its own. Studies show that piperine (black pepper extract) increases the bioavailability of curcumin by 2,000% by inhibiting its hepatic breakdown. Dietary fats also improve its absorption (curcumin is fat-soluble). Always consume your turmeric with a pinch of freshly ground black pepper and a fat source (plant milk, coconut oil). Golden milk combines all these optimal conditions.
Dietary turmeric powder contains approximately 2 to 5% curcuminoids (curcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, demethoxycurcumin) depending on quality and origin. Concentrated standardised turmeric extracts (95% curcuminoids) used in clinical studies are different. For dietary powder, common nutritive doses are 1 to 3 g per day (one teaspoon). For therapeutic effects documented in studies, standardised extracts with piperine are generally needed at doses of 500 to 1,000 mg of pure curcumin.
Kiki Health sources certified organic ingredients. Premium turmeric traditionally comes from India (Andhra Pradesh or Kerala region) or Sri Lanka, where it is grown without synthetic pesticides. Organic certification guarantees the absence of pesticide residues — important because turmeric can accumulate heavy metals from the soil. Check the organic certification logo (Soil Association) on the Kiki Health packaging.
Meta-analyses of randomised clinical trials (including Turner 2020, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage) show that curcumin extracts significantly reduce joint pain in osteoarthritis, with efficacy comparable to ibuprofen in some studies but without the gastric side effects. These results relate to standardised high-bioavailability extracts — for dietary powder, effects are milder but real within the context of an overall anti-inflammatory diet.
The most popular way is golden milk: mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric, a pinch of black pepper and a pinch of ginger into warm coconut milk with a little honey. You can also incorporate it into curries, smoothies, soups, dressings or coloured rice. For a maximised effect, always add black pepper and a fat source.
Turmeric at dietary doses is safe for most adults. Contraindications: gallstones or bile duct obstruction (turmeric stimulates bile production); blood clotting disorders or anticoagulant therapy (mild anticoagulant effect); before surgery (stop 2 weeks before). Pregnancy at high doses: turmeric may stimulate uterine contractions — culinary doses are safe but avoid concentrated supplements during pregnancy. Possible interaction with antidiabetic medications (additional blood sugar lowering).
