Kiki Health: The Organic and Natural Supplement Revolution
Kiki Health has become a go-to name in the world of organic and natural supplements. This innovative British brand offers nutritional supplements made from whole ingredients, or...
Ionic liquid iron is in Fe2+ (ferrous) form, directly absorbable by intestinal cells without requiring digestive conversion. Classical iron supplements are often in Fe3+ (ferric) form, which must first be reduced to Fe2+ before being absorbed — a step that reduces efficiency and causes more digestive side effects (constipation, nausea). The liquid form allows precise dosage adjustment and better tolerance.
Iron deficiency (the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide) manifests as intense fatigue even after rest, pallor, breathlessness on exertion, headaches, difficulty concentrating, brittle nails, hair loss, and unusual cravings (pica: desire to eat soil, ice, or chalk). Confirmation requires a blood test: ferritin, blood count (haemoglobin). Women of childbearing age, pregnant women, vegans and vegetarians, and endurance athletes are most at risk.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) increases non-haem iron absorption (from plants and supplements) by 2 to 4 times. It reduces Fe3+ to Fe2+ and forms soluble complexes with iron, keeping it in an absorbable form throughout transit through the small intestine. Take your ionic iron with a glass of orange juice or our Organic Vitamin C from Kiki Health for optimal absorption.
The EU NRV is 14 mg/day for women (higher needs due to menstruation) and 8 mg/day for men. Actual needs vary greatly depending on ferritin level revealed by blood test. Therapeutic doses prescribed by a doctor for iron deficiency anaemia are much higher. Never self-medicate at high doses without a blood test: iron excess is toxic (oxidative overload).
Iron supplementation during pregnancy must be prescribed and monitored by a doctor. Pregnant women have greatly increased iron needs (27 mg/day), but excessive supplementation carries risks. Ionic form is particularly well tolerated. Always consult your gynaecologist or midwife before starting supplementation during pregnancy, and establish the baseline ferritin level with a blood test.
Space your ionic iron at least 2 hours from: dairy products and calcium (inhibit absorption), tea, coffee, and red wine (tannins), whole grains and legumes (phytates), proton pump inhibitors (reduce gastric acidity needed for absorption), and calcium-based antacids. Take your iron on an empty stomach if tolerated, or with vitamin C.
Formally contraindicated in haemochromatosis (genetic iron overload) and other iron overload diseases. Caution with certain haematological diseases (thalassaemia, sickle cell disease). Do not take at high doses without a blood test. Interactions with some antibiotics (tetracyclines, quinolones) and L-thyroxine: space intake 2–3 hours apart.
