Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is an Andean tuber grown at 4,000 metres altitude in Peru. It is described as a hormonal adaptogen because it regulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis — the central axis governing sex hormones and stress — without providing exogenous hormones. Unlike phytoestrogens (which mimic oestrogens), Maca acts on endocrine signalling through unique compounds called macamides, stimulating endogenous hormone production.
This is its best-documented use. A randomised trial published in Andrologia (2002) showed a significant improvement in libido in men after 8 weeks of Maca supplementation versus placebo. Studies have also shown improvements in sperm motility and volume after 4 months. In post-menopausal women, a 2008 study (Menopause) demonstrated a reduction in menopausal symptoms through its balancing action on sex hormones.
Yellow Maca is the most common and most studied variety — it is generally the base of standard powders. Black Maca is specifically studied for memory and male athletic performance (spermatogenesis). Red Maca is more targeted towards women and bone health (post-menopausal osteoporosis study). Kiki Health indicates the variety on its label — check it to choose the one best suited to your profile.
Add 1 to 3 teaspoons (3 to 10 grams) to your smoothies, porridge, lattes or recipes. Maca has a naturally malty, slightly sweet taste that pairs well with cacao, Manuka honey, dates and almond milk. Gelatinised Maca (pre-cooked) is easier to digest than raw powder for those with a sensitive stomach. For hormonal effects, a 3-month course is recommended.
No, Maca is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to insufficient clinical data on these populations. Its action on the hormonal axis calls for caution outside of medical supervision. For women wishing to improve their fertility, Maca can be used during the preconception phase (before pregnancy) but should be stopped as soon as pregnancy is confirmed.
Absolutely. Maca is one of the rare adaptogens whose efficacy is as well-documented in men as in women. For men: improved libido (randomised studies), support for spermatogenesis, energy and physical endurance. Black Maca is the variety most specifically studied in men for reproductive and cognitive performance.
Maca is not recommended for people with a history of hormone-dependent cancers (breast, uterus, prostate) without medical approval, due to its action on the hormonal axis. People with thyroid conditions should exercise caution (raw Maca contains goitrogens that may interfere with the thyroid — the gelatinised version reduces this risk). Avoid in cases of severe bipolar disorder (potential activating effect).
